A voice calls out, "Kay!". I turned around towards the entrance at her arrival.
"Hey Saski. Is it 12 o'clock already?" Relieved to see her.
"Wow, Kay. You almost look like you're THAT excited to be at library. You can cover for me too if you want" She jokingly said it with a smile. 'Excited' is an understatement.
"Uhm, no thanks." Trying to hide the fact that I think I've just seen a ghost.
Saskia was the one that introduced me to this job. She is in a lot of my classes - mostly science classes - even though we've planned on different majors. She'd be joining the nursing program next term while I'd be on my way of becoming an environmentalist. I've always been very anemic of how our planet is on a toll to doomed. Someday everyone will be banned from chewing gums and smoking so they can't litter. I hate smokers, specially the ones that you have to stand behind while they're smoking. Besides, smoking is bad for health. That's the least to the damages; there's global warming, pollution and deforestation to name a few. One thing that we have in common is that we share the same beliefs - precisely this as one of them.
"Hey, Saski. You've worked here long enough to know what happens around here right?" I asked.
"Well, What do you mean?"
I hesitated,"Like... notions... that are... unspoken"
She whispered a big "OH" in disbelieve. "That's why I dare not to work at night... and alone."
"You could have told me this sooner don't you think?" I tried to swallow from the irritation but it was suddenly difficult. So she's seen it.
"I haven't seen it but I've heard that it was 'gianormous' and very swift at speed."
My legs could barely support my body at the thought of it. And to think that taking this job would be the greatest highlight of my dull life; it doesn't seem so ideal anymore. Or should I say my wish has been granted.
"No, you'll be fine. Besides-"
"WHAT DO YOU MEAN I'LL BE FINE!" I cut her off.
She sighed. "Aren't you overreacting a little? Besides, no one has gotten hurt as long as no one brings food. That is why no one is allowed to bring food remember?"
"What does food have anything to do with this?" I do remember the scent of mint. Could it be that it's attracted to food? Or even more petrifying, for some particular reason attracted to people with food? Was I chewing a gum then? Tracing along my teeth, I find no gum. I must have swallowed it, but I don't recall ingesting anything at all. Where did that minty scent come from?
"We are talking about rats aren't we?"
"Rats?" No wonder she thinks I'm overreacting. I'm sure I saw something. It wasn't an illusion.
"No, that's not what I was inquiring about. Maybe this is not the best time to bring this up"
"Kay, you know you can tell me anything."
"Yes but my shift is over and it's time for my next class so I'll see you at our next class?" I darted out as normal as I can not to raise any speculation.
I'm trying to digest my thoughts as I walked to class. Trying to convince myself that it was all in my head as sure as I was about what I saw. There was the scent to brace it even if I was just imagining things. It just doesn't make any sense. Even if I did believe in ghosts, I've never been able to see any. So I've convince myself that it was just a dream. Just then something hard and tall jolted into me. As I look up, this time I was sure, that it was him.
